Note that the strange + 1 added to the number of nested read transactions has a purpose. When calling the item and links methods, the channel was sometimes empty because the threads from the rayon pool pulled all the transactions and stored them in their own thread-local storage. When we accessed this data structure from the main thread, which is not part of the rayon thread pool, one read transaction was missing, so we accounted for it.
